Make an eye test one of your New Year resolutions

At the start of 2012, independent opticians are encouraging people to resolve to make eye care a priority, by booking an eye exam.

As millions up and down the country set about to lose weight, quit smoking and eat less chocolate, independent practices, coming together under the Eye Love My Local Independent Optician campaign, are urging people not to forget about their eyes when making resolutions to pursue a healthier lifestyle in the New Year.

Calls from independent opticians to get people to book an eye examination in 2012, come as results from a national survey* highlight that a quarter of respondents admitted to not having been for an eye exam for more than two years, despite over half thinking they would benefit from one.

Paul Surridge, a spokesman for the Eye Love My Local Independent Optician campaign that commissioned the survey, believes there is no better time to book an eye exam than the start of a New Year.

“At the beginning of January we all consider ways in which we can improve our health. Whether it is resolving to enrol at a gym or drink less alcohol, more often than not our eyes are disregarded in a New Year health overhaul.

“We want people to consider eye examinations as an important part of health maintenance. Many people today put their eye heath at risk by falling into the habit of visiting an optician only when encountering problems with their sight. We recommend and encourage everyone to have an eye exam at least every two years to maintain prolonged eye health.”

An independent optician part of the national campaign, Garrey Haase of Michael James Optometrists, explains why getting your eyes checked is so important.

“Many general health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and raised cholesterol, can be identified as part of a routine eye examination. Regular eye tests also help in the early diagnosis of common eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Treatment of these conditions in the early stages can be vital to help prevent sight loss.

“We wrongly assume that if we can see, then our eyes must be healthy. However, many eye conditions do not have a serious affect on vision in the early stages. The sooner a condition is diagnosed, the sooner it can be treated and good sight can be maintained.”

"The atmosphere, range of designer frames and the high levels of service at Wendy Diddams changed the way I viewed going to the opticians. By using an independent I have found that I don’t have to hang around waiting for ages and I also have never had an appointment cancelled since being with Wendy."
