As soon as we have our first hint of spring, we take to clearing out cupboards and draws as part of the annual spring clean! This year the Eye Love My Local Independent Optician campaign is encouraging people of every age to spring clean their health starting with an all important eye test.
A quarter of people surveyed recently admitted to not having had their eyes tested for more than two years. It is time to get booked in for an MOT. Coming together under the Eye Love My Local Independent Optician campaign, independent practices are urging people of every age to book an eye test to maintain the health of what 75 per cent of those surveyed regarded as their most valued of all the four senses.
Paul Surridge, a spokesman for the Eye Love My Local Independent Optician campaign that commissioned the survey, said: “If the New Year didn’t make you sit back and think about your health then we hope that encouraging you to get your eyes tested as part of your annual spring clean will.
“Many people today put their eye heath at risk by falling into the habit of visiting an optician only when encountering problems with their sight. We recommend and encourage everyone to have an eye exam at least every two years to maintain prolonged eye health.”
An independent optician part of the national campaign, Polly Dulley of Aves Optometrists, explains why getting your eyes checked is so important.
“Many general health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and raised cholesterol, can be identified as part of a routine eye examination. In addition, regular eye tests help in early diagnosis of common eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Treatment of these conditions in the early stages can be vital to help prevent sight loss.
“We wrongly assume that if we can see, then our eyes must be healthy. However, many eye conditions do not have a serious affect on vision in the early stages. The sooner a condition is diagnosed, the sooner it can be treated and good sight can be maintained.”

"The atmosphere, range of designer frames and the high levels of service at Wendy Diddams changed the way I viewed going to the opticians. By using an independent I have found that I don’t have to hang around waiting for ages and I also have never had an appointment cancelled since being with Wendy."
