In the UK, opticians can be either ophthalmic opticians (an optometrist) or dispensing opticians.
An ophthalmic optician, often called an optometrist, is the person you would see to have an eye examination or a contact lens appointment. An optometrist deals with your eye health in more detail than a dispensing optician and has the ability to diagnose and treat visual disorders or diseases that can arise. For example, an optometrist may help to detect the onset of glaucoma, diabetes, cataracts or any other serious eye conditions and refer on to specialists when necessary.
Dispensing opticians are qualified individuals whose speciality is more in the frames and lenses available to you. Hopefully you will have a dispensing optician helping you choose your frames and ensuring you have the best option for your new lenses based on your individual needs. They will also make sure your glasses fit properly when you come to collect them. Some dispensing opticians take further training to fit and manage contact lenses and/or low vision appliances.
All children under 16 having glasses must have the dispense supervised by either an optometrist or a dispensing optician.
"The atmosphere, range of designer frames and the high levels of service at Wendy Diddams changed the way I viewed going to the opticians. By using an independent I have found that I don’t have to hang around waiting for ages and I also have never had an appointment cancelled since being with Wendy."
Naomi Wellman, from Knutsford, patient at Wendy Diddams Optometrist
